Foreclosure Alley

Foreclosure Alley
Areas blighted by repossessions.

Foreclosure alley is most often used to describe California’s Inland Empire, a region to the east of Los Angeles, comprising Riverside and San Bernardino. In January 2008, The New York Times reported that one in 43 homes in the area was facing foreclosure, and in November Black Voice Newscalled Inland Empire ”the poster child for the foreclosure crisis.”

As the economic crisis deepens, it seems likely that foreclosure alley will be used to describe a host of other areas. In May 2008, the BBC suggested that the term might be applied to Broadway Avenue, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. However, according to The Altoona Herald, East Polk County, Iowa, which has seen 46 property foreclosures in the last year, doesn’t yet merit the term.
